Mermaids of Sanssouci

A series of paintings based on statues from the Sanssouci palace gardens in Potsdam, Germany. Done in colored inks, each original measures 19 x 8 cm. Later the nine designs were turned into bookmark prints, which was the initial plan and as such the reason for their unusual size ratio.

Guided by the task of popular annual art challenge “Mermay” - drawing or painting a mermaid every day during the month of May, or on particular chosen days - the concept to turn statues into merfolk characters and thus reinvent them was born. Three different color palettes where used.

  • The Soldier

  • The Hunter

  • The Sheperdess

  • Orange Orchard

  • The Mother

  • The Flower Maiden

  • The Poet

  • The Tea Merchant

  • The Bard
